Fire Shield — New Formula
Fire Shield is a brush-on protective coating used to help prevent fire scale, fire stain, and plating loss on silver-plated items during annealing. Our new formula has been tested in our shop and found to work well for silverware jewelry applications when used with proper annealing technique.
Instructions for Use
Wash and dry silver-plated items in hot, soapy water. After drying, buff the surface lightly with 000 steel wool, then wipe it down with alcohol. These preparation steps help Fire Shield adhere properly to the surface of the metal.
Paint on a thin, even coating of Fire Shield and allow it to dry completely before heating.
Use a black Sharpie marker to mark a small bare area of the metal. Using a torch, heat the metal until the Sharpie mark begins to fade. Do not overheat.
For best removal of the product, quench the piece immediately after annealing. Rinse and dry.
If any Fire Shield residue remains on the surface, wash it off with Dawn dish soap and a scrubby pad.
Keep Fire Shield covered when not in use. This new formula is thicker than our previous version and does not need to be thinned with water.
Important: Fire Shield helps protect silver-plated items during annealing, but it does not make silver plate heat-proof. Results may vary depending on the age, thickness, condition, and adhesion of the plating.
